Chief Executive

Moondance Cancer Initiative (MCI) is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee which was established in November 2019. The purpose of Moondance Cancer Initiative is to achieve Diane and Henry Engelhardt’s vision of improving cancer outcomes in Wales. Currently, these lag behind the rest of the UK and internationally. Moondance Cancer Initiative will achieve this through the judicious use of charitable funding made available by the Moondance Foundation to drive forward improvements in the provision of cancer care in Wales.

Moondance Cancer Initiative will not be a direct provider of treatment but will act as a catalyst, influencing decision-makers in the NHS and Government in Wales. Moondance Cancer Initiative will establish a think-tank modelled on the King’s Fund and the Wellcome Trust, bringing thought-leaders, external groups and expert clinicians to advise on the development of solutions across the entire cancer pathway from pre-symptom screening to treatments. It will innovate and share best practice through the funding of service transformation and research projects, through the dissemination of research and provision of education and training. It will lobby NHS Wales and Welsh Government to disrupt sub-optimum arrangements and transform clinical and commissioning pathways to improve the prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of cancers in Wales.

The Board of Moondance Cancer Initiative is now seeking to appoint a founding Chief Executive to bring their vision to life and improve outcomes for cancer in Wales.

The Role

  • Reporting to the Chair of the Board, Geoff Graham, the Chief Executive will be responsible for developing the MCI organisation from its current position as a start-up organisation.
  • Working closely with the Main Board, the Management Board and the Strategic Stakeholder Forum, the CEO will develop and implement the strategy and be responsible for the organisational development. This will involve recruiting and building a team; establishing the Strategic Stakeholder Forum; creating partnerships; implementing robust governance processes and developing supporting infrastructure for MCI.
  • Thereafter, the Chief Executive will be responsible for overseeing a programme of projects in upper and lower GI medicine and surgery, managing financial and operational plans for MCI to achieve draw-down of funding from the Moondance Foundation, ensuring charitable funds are allocated to optimum effect, evaluating effectiveness and developing sustainable funding streams.

The Individual

  • You will be a high calibre, impactful and inspirational individual with a demonstrable track record in networking, lobbying, stakeholder management, and with the ability to create and sustain effective partnerships.
  • You will have proven experience at Director level in healthcare; life-sciences; charitable sector; cancer-related service or organisation; or have experience of working in or with NHS Wales or Welsh Government.
  • You will be an outstanding communicator with the ability to promote the purpose and strategy of MCI coupled with commercial acumen to maximise the use of donations.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare and life sciences landscape in Wales will be valuable, and existing connections with senior figures and networks in these areas would be advantageous. Experience of overseeing the allocation of grants would be highly desirable, as would be knowledge of protecting Intellectual Property.
