About Business in Focus

Business in Focus is a pioneering social enterprise that has played a unique role within the Welsh Economy for many years, however as the organisation adjusts their offering to tackle a business landscape re-moulded by factors such as Brexit and a global pandemic, that role is more vital than ever.

Business in Focus has supported businesses for more than three decades, offering expert finance and business advice as well as an extensive portfolio of commercial property options, to ensure their clients’ ventures have the best opportunity to grow and prosper.  SMEs are crucially important to the economic future of Wales, and so Business in Focus takes the lead with their services to ensure that entrepreneurs across Wales have the chance to turn their aspirations and dreams into successful enterprises.

Alongside their SME customers, Welsh Government is a substantial stakeholder in the success of Business in Focus. The organisation delivers the flagship Business Wales service that provides small businesses with one-to-one business advice, skills training and workshops, and enables thousands of people to start their own business. Business in Focus also delivers Big Ideas Wales and Enterprise Hub support services on behalf of Welsh Government, providing entrepreneurs in Wales with a complete support package that touches every stage of a venture. They have Enterprise Hubs in Newtown (Powys), Carmarthenshire/Pembrokeshire, and Wrexham, and they are preparing to open a further two Hubs in the near future to broaden their service base. Business in Focus is the Wales Delivery Partner for the Start Up Loan, a service governed by FCA regulations, providing aspiring entrepreneurs with early-stage finance.

Business in Focus manages grants including the Brexit Resilience Grant (aimed at helping companies access finance to strengthen their operating position) and supported the Welsh Government’s Economic Action Plan by fostering better business practices and supporting the promotion of ethical employment in supply chains. Through their team of experts, Business in Focus provides owners and managers of SMEs with tailored consultancy advice to suit a multitude of circumstances across all stages of the business life cycle, such as planning, employment and HR issues, support in accessing finance, training seminars and networking events.

The business accommodation portfolio includes owned property at 23 sites across South Wales, the Valleys and Wrexham. This houses 500 unique small businesses who benefit from on-site advice and access to a broad entrepreneurial community, making Business in Focus far more than just commercial landlords.  Business in Focus places their tenants at the centre of everything they do, offering the business space and flexible support needed for their clients to deliver their products and services in the manner that suits them best. These rental revenues are then reinvested to further expand services, which really has been at the heart of their success.

In September 2021, Katy Chamberlain is retiring from her role as Chief Executive of Business in Focus, after a ground-breaking nine-year tenure that has seen the organisation double in size and become the leading providers of business support services in Wales, and so they are seeking a dynamic, inclusive and customer focused candidate to be their next Chief Executive and to lead the organisation into its next phase.
