ColegauCymru is the voice of Further Education (FE) in Wales. We are an education charity that promotes the public benefit of FE in Wales. We undertake research and policy development and provide practical support to the FE community.

As the voice of further education in Wales, we: 

  • enhance both the national and international reputation of further education;
  • represent the interests of and advocate for our member colleges; support our member colleges to optimise their contribution to Wales' economic and social development;
  • provide expert advice on communications and political affairs, and trade union and employment matters; and deliver policy solutions that satisfy both the ambitions of learners and the needs of employers

The postholder will be responsible for leading ColegauCymru to ensure the further education sector's views are heard, the benefits of further education and skills are promoted and its interests effectively represented. The postholder will achieve this by working with sector leaders and key stakeholders, especially the Welsh Government, to influence the strategic direction and shape of policy, while leading effective lobbying campaigns and consultations.

The position requires excellent people and communication skills along with business acumen. It is essential that the post holder is fully aligned with and enthusiastic about the values and objectives of the charity and its Board.

Skills

  • Have strategic vision and the ability to lead debate on the future direction of skills policy in Wales in the Post Compulsory sector.
  • Demonstrate that you are a highly articulate communicator both in speaking and written form.
  • Have strong commercial skills and show evidence of using this to deliver change.
  • Have excellent influencing and negotiating skills and the ability to communicate with partners involved in formal negotiation settings.
  • Have strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and enthuse others to ensure the delivery of effective partnership working.
  • Have the ability to work effectively with others, to focus on the delivery of specific outcomes.
  • Have the ability to establish good working relationships with the full range of partners and stakeholders involved in the PCET sector.
  • Have the ability to manage effective communications in a political environment with numerous stakeholders.
  • The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Show evidence of significant leadership experience at a senior level in an organisation.
  • Show experience of the management of an organisation to deliver service excellence.
  • Have experience of establishing effective working partnerships across organisations, ideally within Wales.
  • Display a broad understanding of the current PCET policy position in Wales and likely future developments.
  • Show evidence of a strong understanding and interest in the Welsh public service sector, policy development and skills & education.
  • Demonstrate a track record of building strong working relationships with external stakeholders, including in a political context.
  • Demonstrate an active involvement in and commitment to promoting change in the area of diversity, equality and inclusion.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to degree level with evidence of appropriate CPD relevant to a senior leader.
  • Ideally hold a management/professional qualification relevant to working at a senior level within the PCET sector.
