Chief Executive Officer

Harwich Haven Authority

£150,000 + bonus + benefits

Harwich Haven Authority is one of the UK's 5 major Trust ports, responsible for 150 square miles of the Haven. It is an important driver of wealth and employment, handling 40% of the UK's containerised freight traffic and providing Vessel Traffic and pilotage services. It is an independent organisation with no shareholders, and with statutory responsibilities governed by Acts and orders. It reinvests its financial surpluses for the benefit of its stakeholders.

This is an exciting time to be joining the Authority as its next CEO. The business has a clear vision and purpose, and you'll be joining a well-performing executive team supported by a strong Board.

The Role

  • You will lead the £30 m t/o business employing 120 staff to take the organisation forward and fulfil its' vision "To transform the Haven into a thriving community committed to the preservation of its environment and the wellbeing and prosperity of its people."
  • You will represent the Authority as a key partner in the local, regional and national economy and establish effective working relationships with other trust ports and its external stakeholders.
  • Through sound judgement, you will balance the Authority's primary focus on the safe, cost-efficient delivery of services to users of the Haven with opportunities for directly-related commercial activities by advising the Board on potential developments.

The Person

  • You'll be a high-energy, collaborative leader who puts teamwork ahead of individualism and who operates to the highest standards of integrity and strong ethical values. You'll be comfortable role-modelling high standards, whether these are in performance, safety, diversity and inclusion, or governance, and have the drive to embed these across the Authority.
  • You'll embrace the responsibilities of the Authority as a critical piece of national infrastructure and its role as a gateway in the global supply chain. The Authority is a key player in the UK's economic landscape and you'll enjoy networking, maintaining strong relationships with Trade Unions, international customers and local and national governmental stakeholders.
  • You'll be politically astute, understanding the role of the Authority in protecting the Haven's environment and its duty in generating surpluses. Ideally you'll have a commercial mindset, tempered by the obligations on the Authority to consider the interests of all of its stakeholders; and if you are new to the maritime sector, you'll be curious to learn about the Haven's environment and the interests of its users.
  • You'll already be a CEO, or have substantial senior management experience in an organisation of comparable complexity and be attracted to the breadth of this role as your first CEO position. You'll be able to demonstrate balancing strategic oversight with delivery and having a finger on the pulse of operations.
